HARMAN HAILS DECISION TO KEEP HERMOSA BEACH POST OFFICE OPEN

Lawmaker congratulates Hermosa residents for their efforts to prevent facility’s closure.

October 27, 2009
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Postal Service officials informed Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-CA) today that the Hermosa Beach Post Office will not be closed as a result of the Postal Service’s Station and Branch Optimization study, which could still shutter hundreds of branches nationwide in an effort to reduce operating costs.  The news comes one week after the USPS removed four other post office branches in the 36th Congressional District—the Del Amo, Marcelina, and Walteria Stations in Torrance, and the Lennox Branch in Inglewood—from the list of potential closures.

“This is very good news,” said Harman.  “The Hermosa Post Office is the only one in the city.  I’ve been fighting hard to keep our local postal branches open, and I congratulate the residents of Hermosa whose strong voices were heard.”

Two other post offices in the 36th District remain under review—the North Redondo and Galleria Stations in Redondo Beach.

“I will continue working to protect the post offices in my district,” said Harman.  “Any closures now would be ill-timed and will not result in significant savings.  The Postal Service faces significant budget constraints, but it needs a more sensible strategy for tackling that problem.”
