HARMAN CHEERS PRESERVATION OF TORRANCE AND LENNOX POST OFFICES

Lawmaker says “it ain’t over ‘til it’s over.”

October 21, 2009
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Postal Service officials informed Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-CA) today that four post office branches in the 36th Congressional District will not be closed as a result of the Postal Service’s Station and Branch Optimization study, which could still shutter hundreds of branches nationwide in an effort to reduce operating costs.  Three Torrance post offices—Del Amo Station, Marcelina Station, and Walteria Station—were all removed from the list of potential closures, as was the Lenox Branch in Inglewood.

“This is welcome news,” said Harman.  “I understand how important local post offices are to South Bay communities, and I’ve been fighting hard to keep them open.  This is a step in the right direction, but to quote Yogi Berra, ‘it ain’t over ‘til it’s over.’”

Three post offices in the 36th District remain under review: Galleria Station in Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach Branch in Hermosa Beach, and North Redondo Station in Redondo Beach.

“The Postal Service needs a more sensible strategy to confront its budget constraints,” said Harman.  “Any closures now would be ill-timed and will not result in significant savings.  I will continue working to protect the post offices in my district.”
