Statement on the Nomination of Lt. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody as the First Female Four-Star U.S. Army General

June 24, 2008

(Washington, DC)  --  Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement after the Department of Defense announced President Bush’s nomination of Lt. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody to the rank of four-star general. If confirmed, Lt. Gen. Dunwoody will serve as head of the Army Material Command.

“Never before has a woman risen to the rank of four-star general. In every war this country has fought – from the Revolution through the current conflict in Iraq – women have served this nation’s military efforts. Today, we are witnessing history.

“The Department of Defense has announced that President Bush will nominate Lt. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody for promotion to four-star general. The nomination of Lt. Gen. Dunwoody is the latest achievement for women in the military, from Mary Marshall and Mary Allen, who served as ship nurses during the War of 1812, to Brig. Gen. Anna Mae Hays, the first female general officer in the U.S. armed forces. This historic nomination not only recognizes Lt. Gen. Dunwoody’s decades of leadership, but also leads the way for generations of women who will follow in her steps.”
