May 20, 2009

(Washington, DC)  --  Yesterday, Members of Congress held a very productive meeting with the newly elected Prime Minster of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. The meeting dealt with a wide variety of issues, primarily focused on the threat of a nuclear Iran and the continued strength of the U.S.-Israel alliance.

Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz indicated that she was impressed by President Netanyahu’s characterization of President Obama’s unwavering support for the U.S.-Israel partnership.

“The Prime Minister spoke enthusiastically about his meeting with President Obama. The Prime Minister was impressed with President Obama’s strong commitment to Israel and felt confident that his leadership would be strong and consistent on behalf of our strongest democratic ally in the Middle East,” Wasserman Schultz said. “Clearly, they have a great deal of respect for each other and a shared trust regarding U.S.-Israel objectives.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu also agreed with President Obama on a need to keep a host of options open, including much stronger sanctions on Iran.

“Both world leaders are deeply committed to keeping the pressure on Iran and are hopeful that other nations will join them in their efforts to prevent Iran from threatening peace in the Middle East.” Wasserman Schultz said.
