Congresswoman Bordallo Participates in U.S.-Japan-South Korea Legislative Exchange Program
Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo recently returned from Tokyo, Japan, where she participated in the U.S.-Japan-South Korea Legislative Exchange Program. She met with several members of the National Diet of Japan and the South Korean National Assembly, to discuss security, trade, and economic issues, North Korea stability in the wake of Kim Jong Il’s death, and the realignment of U.S. military forces in the Pacific.
This legislative exchange program brings together Members of the U.S. Congress, Japanese Diet and South Korean National Assembly members on a semi-annual basis for in-depth discussions on a broad range of political, economic, and security issues affecting U.S.-Japan-South Korea trilateral relations. Congresswoman Bordallo was joined by Congressman James McDermott of Washington and Congressman James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin for the two-day meeting.
“I recently met with several members of the Japanese Diet and the South Korean National Assembly to discuss a variety of matters important to our countries,” Congresswoman Bordallo said. “We discussed the realignment of military forces in the Pacific and recent progress in the development of a Futenma Replacement Facility in Okinawa. I also discussed recent actions by Congress on the build-up as well as the Obama Administration’s continued commitment to strengthening our military presence in the Asia-Pacific region. These meetings serve as an important tool for collaboration and better understanding of issues of mutual importance. I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress and the Obama Administration to ensure that this build-up moves forward and both the U.S. and Japan continue to implement the terms of the Guam International Agreement."
