Congresswoman Hirono Announces $1 Million in Federal Funding to Support Victims of Domestic Violence in Hawai‘i

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawai‘i) today announced the state of Hawai‘i will receive $1,047,877 in U.S. Department of Justice grant funding to support victims of domestic violence.  The federal grant is being awarded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Recovery Act funds will be used to preserve and create jobs as well as promote economic stability for victim service providers and criminal justice agencies addressing violent crimes against women and their children. The funding will assist victim services and criminal justice agencies (law enforcement, prosecutors, and courts) most impacted by the recession.

Recovery Act funds will be used for activities to enhance and strengthen support services for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. This funding will help increase and support outreach programs that are culturally and linguistically appropriate and competent to underserved populations, encourage coordination of multidisciplinary efforts, and coordinate a managed systems response to effectively address crimes against women and their families.

Congresswoman Hirono voted in favor of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act on February 13, 2009.  President Barack Obama signed it into law four days later.
