Congresswoman Hirono Secure $16.2 million in Hawaii Funding

in the FY 2010 Agriculture Appropriations Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. House of Representatives today passed the FY2010 Agriculture Appropriations bill, H.R. 2997, which funded several requests Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawai‘i) submitted to the House Appropriations Committee in April.  The Committee approved 13 of Hirono’s requests totaling $16,212,000, which includes programs that help provide much-needed irrigation water to farmers, support agricultural research that addresses problems faced by Hawaii’s farmers, as well as continue to protect our island state from the movement of the brown tree snake from Guam.

H.R. 2997 passed out the House by a vote of 266 yeas to 160 nays.

“Agriculture remains a vital component of Hawaii’s economy. During these challenging economic times, it is critical that farmers in my district receive continued federal support in order to increase the odds for long-term survival and success,” said Congresswoman Hirono. “I am appreciative that a significant number of island projects I championed received House approval.”

Congresswoman Hirono’s funded earmarks include:

A member from Texas (Representative Jeb Hensarling) filed an amendment to eliminate funding for the Agricultural Diversification in Hawaii project but ultimately decided not to do so during debate on the bill last night. Congresswoman Hirono was standing by until late in the evening ready to defend the funding on the House floor. Hirono’s statement opposing the proposed amendment will be in today’s Congressional Record and will be posted on her Congressional website (www.hirono/house.gov).
