Congresswoman Hirono Announces more than $3.5 million in
Native Hawaiian Education Grants
WASHINGTON, D.C.— Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawai'i) today announced more than $3.5 million in grant funding from the Department of Education under the Education of Native Hawaiians Program. These grants will support projects that recognize and address the unique educational needs of Native Hawaiian Students, parents and teachers.
Ke Kula O Samuel M. Kamakau $418,863
Ke Kula o Samuel M. Kamakau, a K-12 Hawaiian Language Immersion Laboratory Public Charter School, will develop a comprehensive career options program to promote self-sufficiency in students and families of Kamakau.
Ho’ola Lahui Hawai’i $791,431
The Native Hawaiian Career and Education Project aims to provide volunteer job experiences, improve study habits, engage students in learning about healthcare occupations, and develop transferable skills.
Ka’ala Farm, Inc. $220,495
Ka’ala Farm will partner with Ma’ili Elementary School whose student body is 55% Native Hawaiian to develop a model for instruction that incorporates Hawaiian culture and language into the curriculum.
Pacific American Foundation $366,139
The Pacific American Foundation’s Aina Hanua project will address underachievement of Native Hawaiian students living in rural communities on five islands by adapting curriculum that emphasizes Native Hawaiian culture and values in the teaching of math, science, and social studies.
Kanu O Ka ‘Aina Learning Ohana $799,478
The Kanu O Ka Aina Learning Ohana’s Ho’okauhale project will serve over 2000 Native Hawaiians by providing a wide variety of innovative vocational, literacy, cultural and adult education opportunities through after-school, evening, weekend and intersession programs.
The Institute for Native Pacific Education and Culture $948,874
The Keiki Steps 2 Success program will meet the school readiness needs of at-risk Native Hawaiian young children and their families by increasing their participation in a holistic early education program that is culturally responsive, standards based, and literacy-focused.
