Congresswoman Hirono Announces $1.14 Million in Federal Funding
to Assist Three Health Care Centers in Hawai’i
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (D- Hawai`i) today announced $1,142,647 in U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grants to go toward the operating budgets of three Hawai`i federally qualified community health centers on Maui, O`ahu, and on the Big Island.
O`ahu
$470,709 in federal funds has been awarded to the Waimânalo Health Center.
The funding will be used to help care for the uninsured by subsidizing those who cannot afford proper health care. It will also pay for transportation services and the retaining of foreign language interpreters.
Hawai`i Island
$349,228 in federal funding will address salary support for Bay Clinic, Inc.’s multi-site community health system with locations in Hilo, Puna and Ka’u.
Bay Clinic, Inc. provides comprehensive primary, preventive and urgent medical, dental, and behavioral health care to low-income and medically underserved populations regardless of their ability to pay for services.
Maui
$322,710 in federal funds will be utilized by the Hana Community Health Care Center. The funding will go toward the purchase of medical supplies, help pay the salaries for physicians, dentists, medical technicians, and support staff members.
This grant money represents about 25% of Hana Community Health Care Center’s operating budget.
