SCHAKOWSKY STATEMENT ON
NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY SHOOTINGS

Washington, D.C.—U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement today in response to yesterday’s campus shooting at Northern Illinois University.  A former NIU graduate student opened fire in a classroom room yesterday and killed six students and wounded 16.

“My heart goes out to all the families that have lost loved ones in the tragic shootings at Northern Illinois University,” said U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky.  “This latest shooting is part of a disturbing pattern of violence that has inundated college campuses throughout the country.  Yesterday’s incident comes only a week after a gunman opened fire on a college campus in Louisiana.  And in two months, our nation will come together to remember the lives that were lost in the tragic Virginia Tech shootings last April.  Instead of waiting for the next shooting, Congress should debate and pass tougher gun safety legislation that reduces the availability and proliferation of these deadly weapons.”
