Johnson Introduces Bill Promoting Health and Wellness In Americans

Washington DC… U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson (IL-15) has introduced legislation aimed at reducing obesity, both among children and adults.  Johnson joins Reps. Mary Bono (CA-44), Kay Granger (TX-12), Mike Castle (DE) and Nita Lowey (NY-18) in co-sponsorship of the bipartisan bill called the Improved Nutrition and Physical Activity (IMPACT) Act.  Senator Bill Frist (TN), the Chamber’s only physician applauds the Representatives in this effort and urges bicameral support of IMPACT.

“An estimated 61 percent of U.S. adults and 13 percent of children and adolescents are overweight, and that is a problem,” stated Johnson.  “The IMPACT legislation confronts this problem by giving all Americans, especially children, more information about how to live healthier lives.  A stronger and healthier America means lower health care costs and a better quality of life.”

Rep. Johnson discussed some of the medical problems associated with poor nutrition:  Being overweight or obese increases the risk of heart disease and cancer, the leading and second leading causes of death respectively. Being overweight or obese also brings with it an increased risk for diabetes and musculo-skeletal disorders, such as osteoarthritis. Given the many health risks associated with being overweight, a December 2001 report by the Surgeon General entitled, "A Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity" lists the treatment and prevention of obesity as a top national priority.

The Improved Nutrition and Physical Activity (IMPACT) Act provides training for health professionals and health science students to identify those at risk for obesity and how to prevent these conditions.  In addition, the bill authorizes funds for nutrition education through the Centers for Disease Control, and assists local communities by encouraging increased physical activity by helping secure more walking and bike paths. In addition, the IMPACT bill does the following:

·  Provides training for health professionals and health science students on how to identify those at risk for obesity and how to treat and prevent these conditions
·  Assists local communities to promote good nutrition and increased levels of physical activities among its citizens
·  Assists state departments of education and schools to develop curricula to help students learn to make healthy choices pertaining to nutrition and physical activity
·  Assists clinics that serve minority populations that are disproportionately affected by weight disorders to implement obesity prevention and treatment programs

"I would like to applaud Congressman Johnson for his leadership in addressing this important public health issue,” said Wade Hampton, Champaign County YMCA CEO.  “At the YMCA, we believe it is essential to provide exercise and health education to people of all ages, incomes and abilities.  Since our founding in 1928, we have pioneered community-based health and wellness programs in Champaign.  With Rep. Johnson's support, our YMCA stands committed to making the Champaign community more fit in spirit, mind and body."

National organizations who support the IMPACT Act include the American Dietetic Association, the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, the Food Marketing Institute, the Grocery Manufacturers of America, the National Federation of State High School Associations, Shape Up America, and the YMCA of the USA.
