Washington, DC -- Phones across the Third District starting ringing Monday night and thousands took the call, eager to talk with their Congressman. Congressman John Sarbanes hosted his first district-wide Economic Stimulus Telephone Town Hall meeting for the residents of the Third District.
Congressman Sarbanes opened with a brief report about the bipartisan economic stimulus package. Knowing that there would be a lot of questions from residents about how to get their stimulus checks, the Congressman had representatives from the IRS, AARP and the State available on the call. After introducing themselves the representatives answered the participants’ questions. Maryland Secretary of Veterans Affairs James Adkins joined the call and spoke about the need for Veterans to file their tax returns so that they could receive their rebate checks.
“It is important that everyone is informed and we hope that this is what the Town Hall call accomplished,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “In order for the stimulus to work the money must reach the hands of the American people. Through telephone town hall meetings like this I can bring the experts to my constituents so that they can have their questions answered and know the necessary steps to take.”
The audience was reminded that although veterans on disability or senior citizens receiving Social Security many not be accustomed to filing a tax return, that it was important to file so that they could receive their stimulus payments.
Although the call was focused on the economic stimulus plan the Congressman also answered questions related to the environment, children’s health insurance, jobs, energy, gas prices and numerous other issues.
