$350 Grant to Prevent Underage Drinking

June 25, 2008

Washington, DC -- The Maryland Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention received a grant award of $350,000 to prevent underage drinking. The money comes from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and will go to fund the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) Block Grants Program.

“Underage drinking affects all of our communities,” said Congressman John Sarbanes. “For Maryland’s parents, this grant means that state and local officials will have more resources to prevent alcohol from reaching the hands of our children.”

The goal of the EUDL program is to support and enhance state efforts, in cooperation with local jurisdictions, to enforce laws prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages or the consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors. For the purpose of the program, minors are defined as individuals under 21 years of age.
