Washington, DC -- Congressman John P. Sarbanes, D-03, today announced that the Institute of Museum and Library Services has awarded a $148,000 grant to the Jewish Museum of Maryland, who will provide $230,918 in matching funds.
“This grant will strengthen the museum’s ability to serve the public by advancing the institute’s strategic mission and goals,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “The Maryland Jewish community has a rich history and this grant will help archive and display that story.”
One of the projects that the Jewish Museum of Maryland will use this grant for is the reinterpretation of the Lloyd Street Synagogue (LLS). LLS is the third-oldest synagogue in the United States. It has been home to three different immigrant congregations, both Jewish and Christian. The project will bring a multicultural perspective to the history of LLS.
