Washington, D.C.— Today, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.) released the following statement in response to the House Judiciary Committee reporting his witness protection bill, H.R. 1741, out of Committee:
“Every single day we see evidence in the news that witness intimidation is getting worse, not better. It is more essential than ever that our state and local prosecutors and other law enforcement officials be equipped with the necessary resources to fight this epidemic that is poisoning our communities and the very fabric of our justice system. When our prosecutors are forced to choose between funding costly investigations and protecting witnesses, nobody wins but the criminals.
“The Witness Security and Protection Grant Program Act will help our local law enforcement officials strengthen witness services units, sending a message to criminals that we will not be deterred by fear tactics like intimidation.
“I am extremely grateful to Chairman Conyers, Chairman Scott, and the rest of the Judiciary Committee for joining me in taking a stand to protect the men and women who are courageous enough to testify against violent criminals, and I look forward to joining the rest of my colleagues in passing this legislation out of the full House as soon as possible.”
