Washington, D.C.— Today, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings released the following statement in response to President Obama’s prime time press conference last night:

“We cannot afford to wait another moment to enact a massive reform to our nation’s broken healthcare system. Over the past decade, when President Bush and the Republican Congress were insisting that healthcare is fine, premiums doubled, out-of-pocket costs shot up by a third, and deductibles have continued to climb. While millions of American families grapple with the skyrocketing costs of healthcare and another 47 million individuals grapple with no health insurance at all, the health insurance companies have benefited from windfall profits. This system is broken, and we must heed the President’s call to act with the urgency of now and fix it.

“Since 2007, the Democratic-led Congress has been relentlessly seeking solutions to find a healthcare system that will provide every single American access to quality healthcare. We have convened 79 hearings and held countless meetings to discuss what needs to be done to fix the broken system—and the time has come to put the resulting plan into action.

“The Democratic health care reform has something for everyone. Families who already have health insurance and like it can keep it—and they will find more stability and security. Individuals without health insurance will finally be able to afford coverage. Insurance companies will no longer be able to drop coverage when people get sick and need it the most, and they will no longer be able to deny coverage based on a pre-existing condition. And, importantly, our plan will not add to the massive deficit that President Obama inherited from the last decade of Republican policies.

“Last night, President Obama answered the questions people want to know about how they will benefit from health care reform, and now we must act with a sense of urgency to pass the comprehensive plan that has been ten years in the making.”
