Kildee Announces $2,776,371 Million Grant for Safe and Drug-Free Schools in Flint

WASHINGTON - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that Flint Community Schools would receive a $2,776,371 million grant for the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative.  The U.S. Department of Education, in conjunction with the U.S. Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services, awarded the grant to Flint Community Schools to help fund safe and drug free learning environments.

“We must work together to make sure that all of our children are placed in a safe and drug-free environment conducive to learning,” said Kildee.  “This funding will help eliminate the school violence and drug abuse that continues to plague our school systems across this country by promoting healthy childhood development.”

The Safe Schools/Healthy Student Initiative is a collaboration between the U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Justice to provide students, schools and communities with access to services that promote healthy childhood development and prevent violence, alcohol and drug abuse.  These services and activities target both the development of social skills and the emotional resilience necessary to avoid drug use and violent behavior by establishing school environments that are safe, disciplined and drug-free.  The Initiative is based on evidence that a comprehensive, integrated community-wide approach is the most effective way to promote healthy childhood development and address the problems of school violence and drug abuse.
