Kildee Announces More Than $1.6 Million to Help Homeless in Saginaw and Tuscola Counties

Washington – Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that $1,657,156 in federal funding will be awarded to housing authorities and nonprofit organizations in Saginaw and Tuscola Counties. The funds will be used to provide assistance to the homeless.

“Better access to housing means a better quality of life,” Congressman Kildee said. “These funds will provide many families a helping hand so they can find homes and live better lives.”

The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Continuum of Care, a competitive grant program that provides funds to several public and private nonprofit organizations. A goal of this program is to help the homeless become independent and self-sufficient.

The funding has been awarded to the following:

  • $801,819 to the Saginaw Housing Commission, which provides housing assistance and other services in Saginaw County.
  • $557,284 to the Underground Railroad, Inc., provides legal services, support for victims of domestic violence and other services in Saginaw County.
  • $239,014 to the Human Development Commission, which provides transitional housing for homeless people with disabilities in Tuscola County.
  • $59,039 to the American Red Cross, East Shoreline Chapter, which provides housing services in Bay and Tuscola Counties.
