Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that he is turning back $30,961 to the U.S. Treasury in unspent 2006 taxpayer-financed congressional funds.
With Congressman Kildee’s 2006 savings, he has turned back a total of $1,399,425 in funds to the U.S. Treasury since his coming to the U.S. Congress – a fact that has earned him a reputation for being one of the most frugal members of Congress.
“My dollars are the taxpayer’s dollars. That is a fact I take very seriously,” Congressman Kildee said. “I hope my actions will encourage the Administration and the Congress to do everything possible to reduce wasteful spending so we can best use the American people’s money.”
The savings that Kildee has returned to the Treasury is money that was allocated to him in 2006 for his operating budget to run congressional offices in Washington and Michigan. Kildee’s 2006 savings includes money from portions of his budget earmarked for office expenses, including travel and office equipment.
