Washington - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that a $999,947 federal grant has been awarded to the Flint, Michigan public schools under the Teaching American History program.
Congressman Kildee worked to ensure that Flint received these funds. In March of 2007, the Congressman wrote a letter to the Department of Education in strong support of the Flint school district's application for these funds.
"Teaching American history allows our children to learn more than just names and dates. It helps them gain a better understanding of our country's origin, values and government," Congressman Kildee said. "This funding will help students in Flint learn more about their country's history so they can be active and informed citizens."
The Teaching American History program supports three-year projects to improve teachers' knowledge and understanding of traditional American history through intensive, on-going professional development. Grantees must work in partnership with one or more organizations that have extensive knowledge of American history, including libraries, museums, nonprofit history or humanities organizations and higher education institutions.
The U.S. Department of Education awarded this grant with funds appropriated by Congress.
