Kildee Secures $500,000 for Vital Genessee County Sewage Project

Washington – Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) today announced that he has helped secure $500,000 for the Genesee County Drain Commission. The funds will be used to support the North-East Relief Sewer Project, which would build water infrastructure and ensure clean and safe water.

“A viable water supply is not a luxury. It is a necessity that everyone deserves,” Congressman Kildee said. “These funds will help residents in Genessee County access water that is clean and safe.”

Congressman Kildee worked to ensure that Genesee County would receive these funds. In March of 2007, the Congressman wrote a letter to the House Interior-Environment Appropriations Subcommittee specifically requesting these funds for this project. As a result, the committee ensured these funds were part of the FY2008 Interior-Environment Appropriations bill.

A strong advocate for a safe water supply in his district, Congressman Kildee has secured $2.376 million for this project and related one since 2004.

Specifically, the $500,000 will be used to complete construction of 27 miles of sanitary sewer pipe and two pump stations that will collect local sanitary sewage and transport it to a compliant treatment facility. When completed, this sewer pipe would eliminate direct discharge of sewage into surface waters, lakes or streams.

The funding comes from Environmental Protection Agency State and Tribal Assistance grants in the FY2008 Interior-Environment Appropriations bill. The legislation now needs to be approved by the U.S. Senate.
