WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced that Mott Community College has been awarded a $3,662,403 stimulus grant to implement a Green Construction career pathway for low income participants. The program will train 200 students for a Green Construction Certificate Training Credential and will place 140 participants into unsubsidized employment. This grant was made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which passed the House of Representatives on February 13, 2009 with Congressman Kildee’s strong support.
“Our manufacturing communities have been hit hard by the current economic downturn, and too many of our friends and neighbors are struggling as a result. I have always believed that education and economic opportunity go hand in hand, and this grant will help 200 low-income members of our community train for a career in the fast growing field of green construction. I look forward to the continued revitalization of our area and all the good this grant will do for our communities,” said Congressman Kildee.
The grant to Mott Community college is part of the Department of Labor’s Pathways Out of Poverty grant program, which will integrate training and supportive services into cohesive programs. This will help targeted populations find pathways out of poverty and into economic self-sufficiency through employment in energy efficiency and renewable energy industries. Despite the economic downturn, these green industries present many potential opportunities for individuals to learn new skills and competencies, gain employment and advance along career pathways.
This grant will enable Mott to develop a Green Construction career pathway for low-income participants through a Green Construction Certificate Program (GCON). The Model provides participants with a pre-skills training course and a 12-course training series covering the basic skills and knowledge needed to enter employment in the green construction trades. In addition to the Green Construction Program, participants will have the opportunity to participate in the Energy Conservation Apprentice Readiness (ECAR) program, and the Road Construction Apprenticeship Readiness (RCAR) Program.
