WASHINGTON - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that Career Alliance, Inc. of Genesee and Shiawassee Counties will receive $393,687 in grant money to help the redevelopment of local low-income housing. The U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded this money to Career Alliance, Inc., as part of its YouthBuild program, which gives young adults the opportunity to learn valuable construction skills rehabilitating and building low-income housing in Flint.
“I am pleased these funds will be made available to help improve opportunities for local youth by teaching valuable skills that will equip them to support themselves while at the same time developing a sense of personal and neighborhood responsibility,” said Kildee. “This program helps gets kids involved by making them partners in rebuilding their community."
Career Alliance, Inc., serving Genesee and Shiawassee Counties is one of 25 agencies in the State of Michigan designed to provide comprehensive workforce development programs. As part of the Michigan Works system, Career Alliance, Inc. provides equal opportunities in services to employers, students, persons with disabilities, veterans, welfare recipients, underemployed and unemployed individuals. These services are available free of charge, to all that seek them.
The Youthbuild program enables young adults between the ages of 16 and 24 to complete their high school education and achieve on-the-job training in construction skills. Students build or renovate single-family homes and multi-family apartments, which are sold at affordable prices, to low-income persons as well as homeless individuals and families. Approximately $58 million will be awarded to grantees nationwide for the Youthbuild program this year. |
