Washington, D.C. – During an organizational meeting of the House Education and Labor Committee today, Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) was officially named chairman of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education.
“As chairman of this subcommittee I will take an active role in strengthening our nation’s education system, such as working to improve and reauthorize the No Child Left Behind Act,” Congressman Kildee said. “I intend to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure this law is best serving our children.”
The Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education has jurisdiction over elementary and secondary education, education of students with disabilities as well as homeless and migrant children. In addition, the subcommittee covers school construction, overseas dependent schools, career and technical education, school safety, alcohol and drug abuse prevention and early learning programs such as Head Start, which the 110th Congress will reauthorize. The subcommittee also has jurisdiction over the Child Care and Development Block Grant.
Congressman Kildee is the number two Democrat of the full House Committee on Education and Labor and a member of the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions. In addition, he serves on the House Committee on Natural Resources. Congressman Kildee is also co-chairman of both the Congressional Automotive Caucus and Native American Caucus. |
