Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that the City of Zilwaukee will receive a $500,000 grant from the United States Department Agriculture (USDA) for a water and waste disposal improvement project. The municipality has also been approved for a loan of $2.79 million for the project.
“As infrastructure decays or becomes overwhelmed by increased volumes, it’s important to make the necessary investments to rebuild our sanitation systems, our highways, and our bridges,” said Kildee. “Local governments are strapped for cash in this time of economic hardship, but these funds will help to ensure that critical projects will not be delayed.”
The rural development funds will be used to replace 6-inch and 8-inch underdrain segments. The grant and loan will also aid in funding 485 sanitary service lead replacements within Right-of-Way, to rehabilitate 42 manholes and to disconnect footing drains.
The USDA office of Rural Development provides loans and grants for water, sewer, storm water, and solid waste disposal facilities in cities and towns of up to 10,000 people and rural areas with no population limits. Water and waste disposal loans can be used to construct, repair, modify, expand, or otherwise improve water supply and distribution systems and waste collection and treatment systems, including storm drainage and solid waste disposal facilities.
