| Washington, D.C.-Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) was designated the Ranking Democratic Member on the 21st Century Competitiveness Subcommittee, which is part of the Education and Workforce Committee. The jurisdiction of the subcommittee includes higher education, such as student loans and Pell grants and job training programs. The subcommittee also focuses on programs such as vocational rehabilitation and adult education. Last Congress, Kildee was the Ranking Democratic Member on the Education Reform Subcommittee and led the Democratic efforts on the No Child Left Behind Act.
During the 108th Congress, this subcommittee will be concentrating on the reauthorization of the student loan and Pell Grant programs in the Higher Education Act. As part of this effort, Kildee will be focused on reducing college costs, including increasing Pell Grants and ensuring that students can manage and ultimately decrease levels of student debt. The 21st Century Competitiveness Subcommittee will be primarily responsible for dealing with education proposals put forth by President Bush and other members of Congress. Kildee looks forward to working with all the members of the subcommittee to improve the quality of education for all Americans. |
