Kildee Sponsors 21st Annual
Congressional Arts Competition

Washington, D.C.- Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) encourages students from the 9th Congressional District of Michigan to participate in the 21st Annual Congressional Arts Competition, An Artistic Discovery.  Kildee and other members of Congress will promote and celebrate the creative spirit of American high school students across the country.

“It is an honor to participate in a program that emphasizes creativity and stimulates the imagination of our nation’s youth,” said Kildee.  “This competition provides our youth with a wonderful opportunity to share their creative talent with the rest of the nation.”

Local competitions will be held in each Congressional District to determine the winning work of art.  On June 25, 2002, General Motors will sponsor a reception in Washington, D.C. to unveil the winning student artwork from each district.  Invitations to the reception will be sent to Members of Congress and each winning participant.  If the winning participant decides to attend the optional awards ceremony, the student will be responsible for any travel and accommodation costs.  In addition to the Congressional art award, the Savannah College of Art and Design will award a $10,000 scholarship to the student with the winning entry from each district.

Any interested student should submit their artwork to one of Congressman Kildee’s district offices by May 1, 2002 with the proper documentation.  In order to determine the winner, Congressman Kildee has invited two local art professionals to judge the artwork.  An awards ceremony will be held in the district on May 10, 2002 to announce the winning entry.  Any student who participates in the competition will receive an invitation to the awards ceremony in the district.  To receive a copy of the official guidelines or additional information, please visit our website at www.house.gov/kildee or contact Elizabeth Leoty 202-225-3611.
