WASHINGTON – Today, President George W. Bush signed into law Congressman Dale E. Kildee’s (D-MI) bill to protect Congressional pages by expanding and improving the House Page Board that supervises them. Congressman Kildee is the chairman of the House Page Board.
“Our pages are the leaders of tomorrow. They come to Washington to learn about government and the value of public service,” Congressman Kildee said. “We must do everything we can to ensure they are well-supervised and safe.”
The House Page Board supervises Congressional pages – students selected by Members of Congress. Pages serve as messengers at Capitol Hill, attend classes at the House Page School and live in a dormitory adjacent to the Capitol Building. Previously, the board was comprised of two representatives from the majority party, one from the minority party, the Clerk of the House and the House of Sergeant of Arms.
Under Congressman Kildee’s bill, the board will add a representative from the minority party making the body equally bi-partisan. Also, the board will include a former page and a parent of a current or recent page. In addition, the law will require the board to meet on a regular basis.
