Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI), co-chair of the Congressional Automotive Caucus, made the following statement in reaction to today’s announcement by the Department of Transportation issuing regulations to increase Corporate Average Fuel Economy Standards for Model Year 2011:
"The domestic car manufacturers have already begun their transition and are prepared to build high-quality cars and trucks that demonstrate greater fuel efficiency and satisfy consumer demand. Chrysler, Ford and General Motors are building leaner, greener advanced technology vehicles, including hybrids and alternative-fuel vehicles, and have developed plug-in hybrid technology like that employed by the Chevy Volt.
"The Corporate Average Fuel Economy standard provides an essential national standard that ensures that manufacturers are able to provide a fuel efficient vehicle fleet that is compliant with the ambitious uniform standards set by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. Particularly in a time where car sales have fallen drastically, imposing multiple fuel economy requirements on the automotive industry could have long-lasting detrimental effects."
