Kildee Cosponsors Annual Congressional Arts Competition

WASHINGTON - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) encourages students from the 5th Congressional District of Michigan to participate in the 25th Annual Congressional Arts Competition, An Artistic Discovery.  Kildee and other members of Congress will promote and celebrate the creative spirit of American high school students across the country.  Students have until April 28, 2006, to submit their works to any one of Congressman Kildee’s three Michigan offices.

“It is an honor to participate in a program that emphasizes creativity and stimulates the imagination of our nation’s youth,” said Kildee.  “This competition provides our youth with a wonderful opportunity to share their creative talent with the rest of the nation.  Visitors from all over the country and the world will be able to see the brilliant work of our nation’s finest young artists in the hallways of the U.S. Capitol.  I encourage any student with work they would like to share to participate in this contest.”

Celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2006, An Artistic Discovery is an annual competition held in each of the 435 Congressional Districts, created to highlight the importance of art education by recognizing outstanding talented young artists across America.  The winning entries are on exhibit for one year in the United States Capitol Building, with the student’s name and his/her Representative listed alongside each piece.

Any student at a public or private high school, including alternative or vocational schools, in the 5th District is eligible to submit a work of art by April 28, 2006.  Artwork must be two-dimensional (no sculpture) and can be in any medium - including painting, drawing, collage, print, mixed media, computer generated or photography - no larger than 30'' by 30'' to the outside dimensions of the frame, and it must be ready to hang.

In order to determine the winner, Congressman Kildee has invited a professor of art at Saginaw Valley State University to judge the submitted pieces.  The winning entry will be announced in the district shortly after the entry deadline, and Congressman Kildee will meet and present the winning student with an award certificate.  To receive a copy of the official guidelines or additional information, please visit our website at www.house.gov/kildee or contact Jacob Bennett of Congressman Kildee’s staff at (989) 891-0990.
