Washington, D.C.-Today, Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) celebrated Earth Day by calling on the Bush Administration to stop its assault on the environment. Over the past four years, the Bush Administration has reversed and weakened numerous environmental protection laws at the expensive of the public’s health and safety.
“Regrettably, the Bush Administration has been working to reverse decades of bipartisan progress on the environment by attempting to roll back bipartisan landmark legislation including, the Clean Air and Water Act, and the Safe Drinking Water Act,” said Kildee. “The Bush Administration is one of the most environmentally unfriendly administrations I have had to work with while serving in Congress. Despite strong opposition from the public, the Bush Administration continues to aggressively pursue policies that undermine our environmental laws and regulations.”
The Bush Administration is the first administration to abandon the principle of holding polluters financially responsible for polluting the environment. Despite strong public opposition, the Bush Administration has continually tried to open up the pristine coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil and gas drilling. The Bush Administration is also trying to delay imposing limits on the emission of toxic mercury, despite the fact that 600,000 babies are born each year with prenatal mercury exposure, which can cause damage to the brain and heart.
“Earth Day is a solemn reminder of our collective responsibility to preserve our environmental surroundings and natural resources for generations to come,” said Kildee. “I will continue to fight against the Administration’s environmental rollbacks and to prevent them from auctioning off our environment to the highest bidder. We must continue to work together to keep our air and water clean and to protect our precious public lands.”
As a senior member of the Resources Committee, Congressman Kildee has continually demonstrated his commitment to the conservation and preservation of the environment. Kildee has worked hard to secure full funding for conservation programs that help preserve and protect our nation’s precious natural resources. In addition, Kildee has been a strong advocate of sensible regulations and protections that will enable future generations to enjoy a safe, clean and healthy environment. |
