Kildee Earmark to Improve Access to Downtown Saginaw

Feds to Send $10 Million to Fund I-675 Ramp

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that the House passage of H.R. 1195, a technical corrections bill amending the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), would allow a sum of $10 million in federal funding to be spent to construct an interchange at Interstate 675 and Warren Avenue which would also serve Washington Avenue.

A Warren Avenue interchange would provide better access to the available commerce and facilities in downtown Saginaw while minimizing the environmental impact on the nearby Saginaw River,” said Kildee.

Kildee and Senators Stabenow and Levin secured $10 million in earmarks in a 2005 transportation bill to help fund the planned installation of a Washington Avenue ramp onto I-675. The construction of an interchange at Warren Avenue, however, was deemed a better option after a series of public meetings including the Michigan Department of Transportation; the City of Saginaw; the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce; Saginaw Future, Inc.; and 48 neighborhood, business and religious groups.

Congressional action was necessary to shift the funds for use at the Warren Avenue interchange. The President is expected to sign the bill into law.
