Kildee Announces $3 Million Grant for Michigan Schools

Washington, D.C.- Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that the state of Michigan is eligible for a $3 million incentive grant under the Workforce Investment Act.  The Department of Labor, in collaboration with the Department of Education, selected only 12 states to participate in this competitive grant program after carefully evaluating performance data.  The state of Michigan qualified for this incentive grant by exceeding performance levels and standards established by federal law.

“I am delighted that the state of Michigan was selected to participate in this grant program,” said Kildee.  “This grant will reward those schools and teachers who are committed to improving academic standards for the educational benefit of students.”

In order to qualify for this grant, each state had to exceed certain criteria, which included placement after training, retention in employment, and improvement in literacy rates.  Each state can use the incentive grant to support innovative workforce development and education activities that are authorized under title I or II of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998.  The 12 eligible states must submit their applications for incentive funding to the Department of Labor by June 17, 2002.

Congressman Kildee is second most senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee.  Kildee is the top Democrat on the Subcommittee on Education Reform, which oversees federal programs for K-12 education, including Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Child Nutrition and School Lunch, Head Start and Special Education.  During this Congress, Representative Kildee has primarily focused on accountability for educational results, increased teacher quality, class-size reduction, school construction and improved school safety and discipline.
