Kildee Receives American Humane Association Award

Washington, D.C.- Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) received the Ultimate Humane Award from the American Humane Association for his outstanding commitment to children’s issues and animal welfare.  Kildee was one of only three Michigan members to receive the Ultimate Humane Award.  The American Humane Association evaluated the voting records and sponsorship of every member of Congress to determine which legislators consistently support children’s issues and animal welfare issues.

“It is a tremendous honor to receive this commendation from the American Humane Association,” said Kildee.  “My voting record on these issues reflects my strong commitment to protecting children and animals from abuse, neglect and cruelty.”

As a senior member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, Congressman Kildee has continually demonstrated his commitment to the protection and well being of our nation’s youth.  During the 107th Congress, Kildee was influential in the creation and passage of many of the child welfare bills that were evaluated by the American Humane Association.  Kildee has also worked hard to prevent cruelty to animals while serving as a senior member of the House Resources Committee.  In addition, Kildee has successfully secured funding for conservation and preservation programs that help preserve and protect the fragile habitats of thousands of animals.

The American Humane Association, founded in 1877, is the nation’s only national organization dedicated to child and animal protection.  The AHA provides national leadership in the development of programs, policies, and services on behalf of children and animals who are abused and neglected.  During the 107th Congress, House Members were evaluated by their sponsorship, co-sponsorship and votes on 17 important pieces of legislation.  Three types of awards were given: one for support of animal legislation, one for support of children’s legislation and an ultimate award for those members who have supported both animal and child legislation.
