| Washington, D.C.- Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that Mott Community College (MCC) would receive $1,698,295 in federal funding over the next five years to fund Upward Bound educational programs in Flint. Upward Bound works with low income high school students to help develop skills for admission and success in college. Mott Community College will receive $339,659 in federal funding each year for the next five years. MCC is one of only five institutions of higher learning in Michigan to receive federal funding for a five-year period. The U.S. Department of Education awarded federal funding to only 20 throughout the state of Michigan.
I am delighted to announce that Mott Community College will receive federal funding again for the Upward Bound Program, said Kildee. It is imperative that the federal government work with local governments and educational institutions to help equip all of our children with the skills necessary to succeed in the classroom and the workplace.
Mott Community College (MCC) will administer the program to a total of 75 participants in the Flint area. Student involvement in the program usually last three or four years. During the summer months, participants typically spend six weeks with tutors learning a variety of subjects and academic skills. Participants continue studies during the school year by attending after-school sessions. Furthermore, Upward Bound sponsors college campus visits to schools throughout the Midwest, including schools in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. |
