Kildee Statement on G.M. Bankruptcy Filing

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI), Co-Chair of the Congressional Automotive Caucus, released the following statement in response to General Motors’ bankruptcy filing:

“Today’s bankruptcy filing by General Motors is difficult news for the people of Michigan who have already been struggling for far too long due to the downturn in the domestic auto industry. But I am hopeful that through restructuring, G.M. will come out of this process a stronger company that will ultimately benefit Michigan’s working families. And while today’s announcement may be difficult to take, we must view it as the first step to the reinvigoration of G.M. and of our local economy.

As we move forward, we must remember the tremendous sacrifices made by workers and retirees to help make this restructuring possible. Active and retired workers will see their benefits reduced and will forgo raises to help ensure the long-term viability of G.M. And ultimately, many workers will lose their jobs. Throughout this process I will be working closely with the Administration and other stakeholders to protect our workers and retirees, keep jobs in our communities and help G.M get back on the path to long-term viability.

I have always said that what America drives, drives America and I am committed to a strong and vibrant domestic auto industry. The health of the domestic auto industry is critical to the economic stability of our local communities, our state and our entire Nation. I look forward to getting through this difficult time and to see G.M. become the economic engine that has driven the American economy.”

G.M released a list of plants that will be closed due to its restructuring. In Michigan’s 5th Congressional district, the Flint North Components plant is scheduled to close in December 2010.
