Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) today announced that a sum of $10 million in federal funds would be spent to construct an interchange at I-675 and Warren Avenue, also serving Washington Avenue. The President’s signature of H.R. 1195, a technical corrections bill amending the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), freed the funding for use at Warren Ave.
“The redesign of the Warren Avenue interchange will improve access to the corridor and stimulate the already impressive efforts to revitalize Washington Ave,” said Kildee. “The progress made by cooperating with the Downtown Development Authority, Saginaw Future and Saginaw’s Chamber of Commerce will ensure that federal funds help to energize local commerce.”
Kildee and Senators Stabenow and Levin secured $10 million in earmarks in a 2005 transportation bill to help fund the planned installation of a Washington Avenue ramp onto I-675. The construction of an interchange at Warren Avenue, however, was deemed a better option after a series of public meetings including the Michigan Department of Transportation; the City of Saginaw; the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce; Saginaw Future, Inc.; and 48 neighborhood, business and religious groups.
