Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that his constituents could finally put an end to un-wanted telemarketing calls by signing up for the national “Do Not Call” registry at www.dotnotcall.gov. In February of 2003, Congressman Kildee voted for legislation to create the “Do Not Call” registry.
“We finally have a law that will stop telemarketers from harassing households and businesses across the country,” said Kildee. “The ‘Do Not Call’ registry will restore people’s privacy and reduce the amount of interruptions that Americans experience.”
The “Do Not Call” registry was created in direct response to constituent concerns regarding excessive telemarketing. The “Do Not Call” registry will drastically reduce the number of unwanted calls constituents receive from telemarketers. The law requires telemarketing companies to remove any registered phone numbers from their calling lists by October 1, 2003. Although the “Do Not Call” registry will eliminate most unwanted phone calls, some industries are exempt from these rules. Fortunately, the service is completely free and it available to everyone.
Congressman Kildee encourages all of his constituents to sign up immediate by accessing the registry online at www.dotnotcall.gov. If constituents decide to register online, they will need to provide the phone number that they want protected and an email address to receive a confirmation message. On Monday July 7th, constituents who do not have access to the internet will be able to sign up for this service by calling the following toll-free number: 1-888-382-1222. |
