Kildee Announces $75,000 Grant to

Help Low-Income Students Attend College

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that Saginaw Valley State University would receive a $74,807 grant from the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program (GEAR UP).  The U.S. Department of Education, working with the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships, awarded the grant to Saginaw Valley State University to increase low-income student’s access to college.

“This grant will make college more accessible and affordable for low income-students by helping students overcome financial and academic hurdles that often deter them from attending college,” said Kildee.  “The GEAR UP program promotes student achievement by strengthening the curriculum in local schools, increasing parental involvement and providing counseling to students to help them prepare for college.  Without programs like GEAR UP, millions of low-income and minority students would be frozen out of college opportunities.”

The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) were created in 1998 during the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to encourage more young people from low-income families to consider and prepare early for college.  GEAR UP is designed to enable more young Americans to succeed in school so that they can become eligible and competitive for admission to colleges and universities.  Based upon proven models, GEAR UP supports institutions of higher education, local schools and their districts, community-based organizations, businesses, and states as they work together to help students and their parents receive information, training, and support along the pathway to college.

Congressman Kildee was the ranking member on the Higher Education Subcommittee when GEAR UP was created in 1998 during the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act of 1965. Currently, Congressman Dale E. Kildee is the second most senior Democratic Member on the U.S. House Education and the Workforce Committee.  Once again, Kildee is the ranking Democratic Member on the 21st Century Subcommittee, which oversees higher education and workplace training programs, including the next reauthorization of the Higher Education Act.
