WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education, announced that Delta College has been awarded $1,511,181 under the Department of Education’s Strengthening Institutions program. The funding will go towards a project to design and implement an integrated system for increasing student retention and will be disbursed over a period of five years.
“Education is one of the most important ways to ensure the success of our young people,” said Congressman Kildee. “Delta College is a leader in providing a high-quality postsecondary education to thousands of students in our community. This funding will help Delta build upon their educational services, improve student retention and continue helping students in our community gain the necessary skills to begin successful careers.”
Delta College President Jean Goodnow was pleased that, through the support of Congressman Kildee, the grant could establish the College as a leader in student retention. "Student retention is a concern for every college in the nation," Goodnow said. "We owe it to our students and to the taxpayers of the Great Lakes Bay Region to not only provide high quality education, but to also have a process in place to help students stick with their education until they reach their goal. We greatly appreciate Congressman Kildee’s continued efforts to support Delta College.”
By September 2014, Delta expects this project will increase: • Within semester retention • Fall-to-winter semester retention • Fall-to-fall semester retention • Graduation rate • Participating developmental students’ grade point average • Participating developmental students’ retention • Online students’ retention
Delta College was established in 1961 as a comprehensive community college to serve the residents of Bay, Saginaw and Midland Counties. During the 2008-09 academic year, Delta enrolled 16,500 students.
