Kildee Announces the Passage of the VFW Charter Amendment Act

Washington, D.C- Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-M) announced the passage of H.R. 3838, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Charter Amendment Act.  Kildee, whose son is a member of the VFW, cosponsored the bill at the request of the VFW.

“We must remove those barriers that previously excluded certain members of the armed forces from enjoying the benefits associated with being a member of the VFW,” said Kildee.

H.R. 3838 will amend the charter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars to make members of the armed forces who receive special pay for duty that was subject to hostile fire or imminent danger eligible for membership in the organization.  The VFW supports and endorses this legislation because it will strengthen and significantly increase charter membership.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States is the nation’s oldest major veterans organization.  Since the VFW operates under a congressional charter, Congress is solely responsible for changing its membership criteria.  Under the current charter, potential members of the VFW must have served honorably in the armed forces and received a (battle) campaign medal for service or for a specific period on the Korean peninsula.
