Kildee Announces $8 Million in
HUD Grants for Flint

Washington, D.C.- Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that the city of Flint has been awarded over $8 million in grants to fund several projects that will facilitate the redevelopment of distressed areas.  The city of Flint will receive a $5.89 million Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), $2.15 million Home Investment Partnerships Program Grant (HOME), and $196,000 Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG).  The Office of Community Planning and Development, a division of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, awarded these grants to the city of Flint to rehabilitate and revitalize the community.

“This funding will enable us to build a safe community and create job opportunities by providing affordable housing to low-income families,” said Kildee. “By investing in families and neighborhoods, we will ultimately help revitalize and rejuvenate our community and local economy.”

The city of Flint will use nearly $1.5 million from the Community Development Block Grant to demolish dilapidated and abandon homes, which pose a safety threat to the community.  The city plans to spend over $2.3 million to rehabilitate 308 single-family housing units.  Over $2 million will go toward assisting 23 organizations that provide services such as feeding the homeless, fair-housing assistance, daycare, senior citizen programs and scholarships to summer camps for low-income persons.

As part of the Home Investment Partnership Program, the city plans to spend over $700,000 to purchase, rehabilitate and resell 11 single-family houses to low-income families.  Nearly 80 low-income families will receive a share of $430,000 from the HOME grant to assist with down payments.  The city plans on using $300,000 towards the rehabilitation of 17 owner-occupied units to avoid further deterioration.  The remainder of the money from the HOME grant will be used for eligible activities in the Eastside Neighborhood of Flint and to fund four Community Housing Development Organizations.

As part of HUD’s Continuum of Care Initiative, the city of Flint plans on using part of the $196,000 Emergency Shelter Grant to provide basic shelter needs to homeless individuals and families.  In addition, a large portion of the grant will be used to provide transitional housing and a variety of support services designed to move homeless people away from life on the street to permanent housing.
