Washington, D.C.- Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that Genesee County would receive a $125,000 Economic Development Initiative Grant in the Veterans Affairs-Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Bill for fiscal year 2004. Kildee formally requested these funds from the Appropriations Committee to help finance the Genesee County Land Reutilization Plan. The Economic Development Initiative Grant for Genesee County was included in the final version of the VA-HUD Appropriations bill, which passed the U.S. House Representatives last week.
“This grant will help fund the cleanup activities that are necessary in order to revitalize and redevelop these abandoned properties and dilapidated structures,” said Kildee. “By investing in families and neighborhoods, we will ultimately help revitalize and rejuvenate our community and economy.”
The Genesee County Land Reutilization Plan is specifically designed to redevelop distressed communities that are in need of economic and environmental rehabilitation.
The Plan is intended to assemble land for transfer to adjacent homeowners, develop long and short-term green space, and assemble land for new housing and commercial development. The objective is to restore the integrity of the community by removing dilapidated structures and redeveloping abandoned properties. The program is a new system of land disposition that renews urban properties through redevelopment and investment. The Genesee County Land Reutilization Plan has been extremely successful and has acted as an exemplary model nationwide. |
