Today, Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) presented the 2004 Victory Against Hunger Award, which includes a $1,000 check, to the Center for Civil Justice in Saginaw, Michigan. The Congressional Hunger Center awarded this honor to the Center for Civil Justice because they developed an innovative and successful outreach campaign designed to fight hunger by improving access to the Food Stamp Program. The Center for Civil Justice was one of only 25 organizations nationwide to receive this honor. In May 2004, Congressman Kildee contacted the Congressional Hunger Center to nominate the Center for Civil Justice for the 2004 Victory Against Hunger Award.
“It is a great honor to present the 2004 Victory Against Hunger Award to the Center for Civil Justice for their outstanding commitment towards fighting hunger in our local communities,” said Kildee. “Due to the outstanding outreach efforts of the Center for Civil Justice, we are another step closer towards winning the battle against hunger because thousands of eligible individuals are now able to take advantage of Michigan’s Food Stamp Program.”
The Victory Against Hunger Award was created 12 years ago by the Victory Wholesale Grocers and the Congressional Hunger Center to recognize state-wide and local anti-hunger organizations that have worked effectively to fight hunger in their communities. Each year, members of Congress have the opportunity to nominate organizations in their own community to receive one of the $1,000 prizes that are underwritten by Victory Wholesale Grocers. This year’s awards were given to anti-hunger, faith based groups, food banks, civil rights and nutrition policy organizations that demonstrated success and creativity in “fighting hunger through improving access to the Food Stamp Program”.
Founded in 1979, Victory Wholesale Grocers is a wholesale distributor of dry groceries and health and beauty care products. Victory is a national company, employing hundreds of people across the country. The Congressional Hunger Center was established in 1993 to fight hunger by developing leaders who have a shared commitment to a nation and a world free from hunger. |
