Kildee Announces Federal Grant to Establish Center Avenue Historic Heritage Route

WASHINGTON – Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) would receive $125,000 in federal funding to establish a 1.5 mile-long Center Avenue Historic Heritage Route on the eastern edge of Bay City.  The Federal Highway Administration, an agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation, awarded MDOT this grant as part of its National Scenic Byways Program to preserve and enhance the legacy of historic Bay City.

“This funding will help provide a historic window to the legacy of Center Avenue,” said Kildee. “The Historic Heritage Route project will enhance the beauty of Center Avenue as well as provide educational opportunities for those who want to learn about Bay City’s legacy.” said Kildee.

The Center Avenue Historic Heritage Route is a 1.5 mile long section of M-25 at the eastern edge of Bay City.  The tree-lined route is familiar to area residents and visitors alike as a home to stately mansions dating back to the turn of the 20th century.  In addition to route beautification, the federal funding will provide for directional signage, a Center Avenue Historic Heritage Route website, and materials for a walking tour, including brochures and large, free standing on-site maps.

The National Scenic Byways Program is a grass-roots collaborative effort established to help recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads throughout the United States. Since 1992, it has provided funding for almost 1500 state and nationally designated byway projects in 48 states.  The program provides merit-based funding for byway-related projects each year.
