| Washington, D.C.- Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that the city of Flint has been awarded a $50,000 supplemental Brownfields Job Training and Development Grant. As part of the Brownfields Economic Redevelopment Initiative, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded this grant to the City of Flint to help facilitate the cleanup of brownfield sites by training local residents to become environmental technicians.
“This grant will help train residents to participate in cleanup activities that are necessary in order to revitalize and redevelop these abandoned and potentially contaminated properties,” said Kildee. “We must provide the resources and training to maintain and preserve the health of the environment so that these areas can be safely used by future occupants.”
The City of Flint will use these funds to conduct job training pilot programs that will help prepare and train individuals to clean up and redevelop local brownfield sites. Flint’s job training program consists of comprehensive environmental technician training, which emphasizes innovative assessment and cleanup technologies. The City of Flint plans to train 70 new participants and place 75% of those participants in permanent environmental technician jobs. The Job Training Pilot Program will specifically focus on cleaning up the abandoned industrial and commercial sites in Flint’s Federal Enterprise Community. |
