| Washington, D.C.- Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that the House Resources Committee passed legislation to reauthorize the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL). The reauthorization was included in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Act (H.R. 4966) that was voted out of the House Resources Committee earlier today. Congressman Kildee supported and voted for the passage of this legislation.
“I am delighted that we were able to reauthorize the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory,” said Kildee. “The laboratory is vital to the environmental health of the Great Lakes region because it performs valuable aquatic research and provides scientific leadership on key environmental issues.”
The Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory is one of 12 federal research laboratories within the Oceanic and Atmospheric Research line office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The GLERL was officially created on April 25, 1974 by NOAA to provide a focus for federal research on the Great Lakes. Scientists at GLERL conduct high-quality research on non-indigenous species, aquatic contaminants, climate change, ecosystem dynamics and hydrodynamics. This laboratory also provides important monitoring and assessment data on temperature, water quality and sediment transport. |
