Kildee Announces Release of $318,750 to Genesee County Drug Court

WASHINGTON – Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that Genesee County would receive a $318,750 grant for their Drug Court program which sentences and treats non-violent drug offenders. The Office of Justice Programs, a division of the U.S. Department of Justice, awarded the grant to the Genesee County Drug Court to improve its drug court for adults and juveniles and to increase their treatment capabilities.

“This funding will go to ensure that the Genesee County Drug Court will continue to treat non-violent felony offenders by expediting their admission into substance abuse treatment programs,” Kildee said.  “By supporting this program, the court will be able to provide a comprehensive program to rehabilitate the substance abuse offender and hopefully prevent their return through the justice system.”

The Genesee County Drug Court serves non-violent felony offenders with substance abuse problems.  The goals of the court are to increase admission to substance abuse treatment services, reduce drug use, reduce recidivism, and to increase educational and career opportunities.

The Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Justice, is designed to assist states, localities, and their court systems in developing and establishing drug courts for adult and juvenile substance abusing offenders.  The drug court programs funded by this program are required by law to target non-violent offenders.
