Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that the Saginaw Public School District would receive a $244,414 grant for emergency response and crisis management planning. The U.S. Department of Education awarded the grant to Saginaw schools to aid in the development of plans for prevention-mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
In a June letter to the Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools, Kildee urged the Department to “look favorably upon [the] proposal” of the Saginaw school district. The Department today granted funding for staff and first responder training
“This funding will help to enable school staff and emergency responders to communicate and coordinate efforts to ensure the safety of Saginaw’s children in times of crisis,” said Kildee. “An assurance of security among parents and students alike is essential to any successful learning environment. I am glad to see that Saginaw schools are taking proactive measures to protect students and staff.”
The Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools Program (REMS) is authorized under the No Child Left Behind Act signed into law in 2001. Typical activities in the REMS programs include reviewing and revising existing emergency response plans, conducting vulnerability assessments, providing training and simulating crisis situation drills. This program will coordinate the Saginaw Public School District emergency response plan with that of local law enforcement, public safety and public health agencies.
