| Washington, D.C.- Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that the National Center for Community Education has been awarded a $128,139 grant under the School Leadership Program. The Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, a division of the U.S. Department of Education, awarded the grant to the National Center for Community Education for the creation of an Urban Principals Leadership Academy to help recruit, train and mentor school principals.
“We must provide real incentives to principals in order to curb the high turnover that has impaired the operations of our local schools,” said Kildee. “Our schools depend on the leadership and guidance of principals that are truly dedicated and committed to helping our students achieve academic excellence.”
The Urban Principals Leadership Academy would help address the severe shortage of aspiring and practicing principals in seven contiguous high-need urban school districts in Genesee County. In order to reverse the lack of recruitment and high turnover, the Academy would provide assistance to local education agencies to help with the development, enhancement and expansion of innovative programs to recruit, train, and mentor principals for high-need schools. The Academy would also help attract and retain principals by providing them with an opportunity to earn a Master of Public Administration with a Concentration in Urban Education Administration from the University of Michigan, Flint. |
